Yellow Chrysoberyl

Chrysoberyl_oval_9.9x7.9mm_2.98cts_N_cb110

A durable, highly refractive gem

Chrysoberyl and Beryl both contain beryllium but that’s where the similarities end – they are distinctly different gemstones.

There are three gem varieties of Chrysoberyl – regular Chrysoberyl, cats-eye Chrysoberyl and Alexandrite.

Regular Chrysoberyl is normally found from a light pastel yellow to a stronger greenish yellow. Cats-eye Chrysoberyl exhibits ‘chatoyancy’ that looks like a cat’s eye when it is cut as a cabochon. Alexandrite is a rare color-change variety of Chrysoberyl that displays different colors in different lighting conditions.

Mint Green Chrysoberyl is a rare form that is colored by the trace element vanadium.

Significant sources of Chrysoberyl are Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Brazil and Russia.

Chrysoberyl is a durable gemstone with a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs Scale and can easily be used in all types of jewelry.
